Being Above and Beyond Yourself
We all face a fundamental choice in life: Am I going to live primarily for myself, or am I going to live primarily for others (e.g., for God, for my spouse, for my children, for my friends, for my church, for my community, for my country, for the common good of humanity, etc.)? The choice each of us makes here will determine not only the basic tone and quality of our everyday lives, but also our ultimate destiny: whether we will find our “true selves” and attain deep and lasting happiness.

Love Is Life that Pours Itself Forth
We are most fully alive when we are “breaking ourselves open and pouring ourselves out” in loving self-gift to God and neighbor.

The Finite Is Capable of the Infinite
The greatest unity the human mind can conceive is a unity of the finite and the infinite. In Jesus Christ, God has made us finite beings capable of the infinite, capable of participating in the divine nature (2 Peter 1:4).

Searching for Home
One of our deepest desires as human beings is a desire for home—a place where we can count on being loved and valued, a place where we will always be welcomed, a place where we can truly feel we belong. Where can we find a lasting experience of “home”? For many of us, our deepest experience of home in this life is found with our family. But throughout the ages, we have also experienced a sense of “home” from a variety of other sources, including our identity as a citizen of a particular country, our membership in a specific culture, and our connection to the natural world. Ultimately, however, we will never be truly and finally home until we are in the Father's house (John 14:2).

Hand It Over
To give one’s self away in love to God is, paradoxically, to be in the fullest possible possession of one’s self, breaking out of the dungeon of the ego and into the infinite spaces of the divine love.

A Mysterious Alchemy Within the Communion of Saints
Our loving actions can be like ripples of goodness in the cosmic sea of the divine goodness, radiating outward from us to touch the lives of innumerable others. We will not know all of the fruits of our loving actions until the end of time, but the revelation of that fruit will “astonish us as the highest beatitude” (Hans Urs von Balthasar).
